Ceramic Work
Considerations in Ceramic Work
Combining different ceramic and print techniques, my ceramic work aims to convey the environment and culture patients were subjected to in these hospitals. I created 8 corner builds out of black chunky sculpture clay, the poportions of which are directly referenced from the 4 major buildings in use in Grangegorman during it's peak period as a psychiatric hospital. This includes the Richmond Penetentiary, Top House, New Richmond and Richmond Asylum. These are the original names of these buildings. Over its 199 year history, the names of these buildings changed, making researching their use across time a little tricky. Patrick Quinlan, author of Walls of Containment: The Architecture and Landscape of Lunacy, made this map of the sprawling Grangegorman campus featuring all of the buildings name changes.
Imagery
The imagery printed on the ceramic forms were either taken by me in Grangegorman, the OPW archives in the National Archives of Ireland or from the Digital Repository of Ireland Grangegorman Histories Photo Collection.
